Common questions
Family Law FAQs
- We have just separated. What should I do first?
- Write down the date of separation, take stock of accounts and assets, and get advice before you agree to anything about the house, the children or the money. Early advice usually keeps a separation cheaper and calmer.
- Do we have to go to court?
- Most matters settle without a final hearing. We aim for a negotiated or mediated outcome, and prepare properly for court so that negotiating from strength is possible.
- How is property divided?
- There is no automatic 50/50 split. The court considers the asset pool, each person's contributions and each person's future needs. We can give you a realistic range early on.
